Wall decor is one of the most essential elements to the completion of a room. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Wall decor proves it. You can tell a lot about a person by the pictures they hang. Here are some design tips to help you hang the best pictures.

One simple starting tip for wall picture frames is always to start with the largest piece you have. Use it as your anchor or center and work around it as desired. The large picture frames act as the guideline. You can mark the space around them with a pencil while you hang each subsequent frame and erase the marks easily later.

Try non-traditional picture mounting or frames. There’s nothing wrong with adding a little interest or depth to the room. Frames that allow you to easily interchange the pictures within them are a blessing for the indecisive.

Your wall needs to be a little eclectic. Mix and match other wall décor around picture frames. Decorated plates, stencils, and canvas art add contrast to the wall but do not detract from the framed art or photos. Use uneven numbers in rows of pictures. Try scattering a few wooden picture frames slightly unevenly but in a pattern so it’s not haphazard.

For a unified theme, match the patterns of the art in the frames to the room. Use the color palette as inspiration. Try pairing the wall décor to other furniture or lighting. You can also reflect back the room by framing mirrors to add depth in small spaces. Do whatever it takes to create a cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

Do you have an empty wall somewhere in your home that you wish you could do something interesting with? Well, there are plenty of answers. One ingenious idea is to make a comprehensive photo wall. All you need are a series of different sized pictures, metal or wooden picture frames and imagination.

First, select a theme for the photo wall. Unless you want this project to be a jumbled mess of randomly selected images and mismatched frames, you should decide on the theme prior to hanging anything. A few general rules to consider: 1. Always make sure you leave enough room on the wall; 2. Keep all wall picture frames approximately at eye-level or just above eye level for easy viewing; 3. Organize the pattern before you hang them. They don’t have to be symmetrical but they should be appealing or interesting.

Pick one design of frame or alternate between two- you do not want the framing to be too distracting but you want to pique interest. Also, select photos that follow some sort of logical pattern. Unconventional displays are encouraged. Whether you’re telling a story, or you’re looking for abstract visual balance, the photos and their order are important too. What’s the point to a beautiful wooden picture frame if you do not have pictures worthy of their framing? If you enjoy photography choose some of your favorite photos.

large picture framesYou could just hang the pictures you put in the beautiful wooden picture frames you bought; or, you could give them the display they truly deserve. You can give a professional touch to anything you hang on your wall and it doesn’t require anything that complicated. Use a few framing techniques and you can give the wall picture frames much more appeal.

Here are a few of the tricks: matting, hinging, and glazing. These included with the framing of the picture should really emphasize its glory. As we’ve discussed in earlier posts, matting is used to center the picture within the frame. It is used in galleries and professional framing. Matte boards are either acid-free paper or cotton-based. It can be placed around or behind the artwork. It is not always the wisest option. Oftentimes it makes the photo look larger. It doesn’t always complement the item in the frame. It’s better with photographs and paintings, then say vintage texts and flattened items.

Hinging is the mounting of the art to the mat. You should always use archival materials. Nothing with oils or glue that can damage the art. It should always be removable and non-restricting. It’s not awful if you have to redo it, but it is awful if you can’t undo it.

As for glazing, that’s just the kind of glass or transparent (or translucent) material you choose to put into the frame to protect the picture. Try avoiding anything that will trap moisture. Also, make sure it doesn’t break easily. That could cut the art and end up being dangerous anyway.

There are creative things you can do with wood picture frames. For one, you can buy a bunch of them and create a wall collage of family memories. It’s a fantastic idea as surprise for family members. A simple black frame might be great for the black and white photos, whereas a mahogany frame looks nice with color photos.

Think of this creative endeavor like it’s a show on some snazzy new home improvement network or one of those talk show host’s brilliant “family gift ideas.” Emphasize the photo memories with a series of beautiful wall picture frames. Mix and match the photos in sections based on familial relations, or by year, or even by event type. There’s no limit to how you can put this together.

Another great option is to do some kind of family tree. You can feature the patriarchs and matriarchs of the family in large picture frames at the top, and decreasing in size hang smaller frames below for each generation. Add in a group photo somewhere at the very top or bottom with everybody should you feel like it. It’s one way to keep track of your family roots and it makes for a nice design.

wall picture framesMatte boards (also called Mats) are thin paper-based borders used in picture framing.  They have several practical applications outside of making the framing look professional.

A matte can be used to get smaller pictures into slightly over-sized wall picture frames. With the exception of mattes made for top-mounting, most mattes have apertures. A matte offsets the picture from frame as a decorative piece. It also keep the picture evenly aligned. To use a matte, you first carefully place the artwork in the matte and then put it inside your metal or wooden picture frame.

Mattes can also be used to preserve any art that you intend to hang. If you own limited edition prints or unique pieces, you should buy acid-free material mattes. Acid-free paper does not ruin paint or film. A matte will keep the print or other artwork from touching the glass. This means that condensation and dust is kept away from the surface of the piece. It prevents mold, mildew, and water damage. And, aesthetically, it draws the eye towards the center of the work, as it creates a natural border between the image and the frame. You can find mattes in black, white, gold, and other shades and colors.

If you cherish the pieces you hang in your home, then mattes are wise investments.

wall picture framesA bare wall just doesn’t cut it in a living room or hallway. You want the room to be cozy and inviting. You can personalize the wall plenty of interesting ways using wall picture frames.

If you have a lot of family photos you want to showcase why don’t you make a wall collage? Take a few large picture frames with photos, find a spot on the wall,  and center them where you like. Take a few small picture frames and disperse them unevenly throughout. It will create an eclectic but eye-catching display.

If you’re not keen on displaying photos, you can always fill these frames with other things. Be creative. Take pieces of avant garde art or modern art you like and frame them. Maybe you have your own sketches or paintings you’re proud to display. These are all great options but sometimes they can seem quite stuffy. Movie posters and vinyl records are things that everybody can relate to. They’re also a way of expressing your other interests.

These are only a few of the many ways that you can use wall picture frames. There’s no reason you can’t think outside the box and do something completely different with them. Maybe even considering re-painting them. You can also stress metal frames.

I have a 6 photo picture frame that hangs up above my bed. Most of the pictures are from my senior year of high school, 7 years ago. I often think about changing them but I hesitate. I like looking back at when I was young and carefree, at all the fun times I had with friends that I may not see anymore but I still think about. High school was a good time for me (which is a rarity for most people) and I like being reminded of it.

That’s the beauty of wall picture frames. Sometimes the ones we leave on our desk get hidden by clutter and we forget about them. But the ones we hang on the wall are always out there, for everyone to see. I enjoy recounting stories and describing who people are to my new friends that come over and see my pictures. There’s something about openly displaying your memories to yourself and to others that only wall picture frames can do.

So when you go frame shopping, think of maybe hanging some on the wall. That way the pictures will never get lost and hidden behind other things but will always be a reminder of happy memories.

large picture frameAfter you buy those beautiful new wall picture frames from My Frame Store, you’ll need to hang them up. But don’t just whip out the hammer and start putting nails in the wall. Let’s walk through the steps of hanging up large picture frames.

  • Before choosing a spot, don’t forget to take into consideration furniture arrangement, lighting, and overall design of the room.
  • With a pencil, make a light marking on the wall where the top center of the frame is. (Be precise. Use a ruler!)
  • Now lay the frame down and measure the distance from the top of the frame to the hanging device(s).
  • Now measure and mark off that same distance on the actual wall.
  • Then take a hammer and nails, or drill, and place them into the correct position where the hanging devices are. Make sure to leave enough of the nail sticking out so you can easily hang up the picture.
  • Carefully hang the frame and presto! You’re done! If the frame is a little warped, you can use Velcro to help it stick better to the wall.

Most importantly, make sure you purchase hangers that can withstand the weight of the frame you are hanging.

wooden framesIt would be cliche to say that a picture is worth a thousand words on a blog for a frame store. But I guess I’ll still be cliche and say that you can capture a moment with a single photograph –a child laughing, a warm embrace, an awkward pose. Pictures can bring us so much joy and laughter when we look back on fond memories of what once was. As our brain struggles to remember what dress you wore to prom, a wooden picture frame with said photograph can jog your memory.
