It’s October folks and craft-making is abound. From here on out your best friends will be home and garden magazines, craft stores, and Martha Stewart. Both kids and adults alike can enjoy the homemade Halloween craft-making. All it takes is a little ingenuity. Some of the easier crafts to make include the use of wooden picture frames. It’s a fun activity for families, and it works as an affordable decoration that can last you for years and years.

Wood picture frames can be easily decorated with paint and add-ons. If you want a spooky looking frame for a mirror it’s pretty easy. First give it a rustic or antique finish. Take a dry brush and add a thin layer of glossy paint. Once the paint is beginning to dry, you can use an old rag (dip it in an oil or stain for wood of your choice) and rub it around the frame. You can also use this technique on furniture so whatever extra materials you have can be used in later projects. Add a few cobwebs to it, pop in the mirror glass, protect the back of the frame with a board of some sort and you’re all set. You just made one scary looking mirror.

Take a look online for more Halloween craft ideas. You’re sure to get some inspiration from seeing what other people have come up with.

Believe it or not you do not need the ultimate print art to decorate your walls. Something trendy you can do is to hang empty frames sans backing. Empty picture frames give shape to the color on the wall. They provide you an opportunity to do something different; something truly unique and creative.

People sometimes forget that negative space is just as important as filled space. When you decorate your room you want to strike a balance between busy spaces and open spaces- this applies to wall decor as well. Empty metal or wooden picture frames are one way to prevent a wall from looking boring without overdoing it.

You can take a simple wooden frame, mahogany or gold, and wrap it in lights. Hang it on the wall above a table, chair, or even a mantlepiece, because it needs something to anchor it. If you don’t want the lights, you can opt for ribbon. It acts as a soothing bedroom decoration.

Another option for bedrooms is to make a floating headboard out of large picture frames. This is often used in lieu of an actual headboard for modern and minimalist bed frames. You can add dramatic flair by hanging curtains along its side.

Hallways and staircases can use the “frame within a frame” design. Find two frames, one slightly larger than the other, and center the smaller one inside the other.

As for main rooms, you can use empty frames of different shapes and sizes to create a collage. They should hang above some kind of seating or mantle so there’s a focal point and they don’t look like they’re aimlessly floating in space.

Have you ever tried something a little different with your wooden picture frames? You can use picture frames for fun little home projects, not just to hang wall art. They’re actually cool looking around a number of items. After going through a few ideas you can get some creative ideas of your own.

Try using picture frames for chalk boards, dry erase boards, and/or poster boards for a message center. These are great for families that want somewhere quick and easy to leave messages like, “Dinner at 5. Be home soon,” or a place to list the weekly chores and to-do list. The picture frame gives the board something eclectic and fun. A white or black wooden frame would look the best, keeping in line the color palette of the board. If you’d prefer to use the board as a calendar, that’s fine too. decorative wood picture frames still keep it looking fun.

You can use large picture frames to hang atlases or maps. Make it even more fun by using pushpins of different colors to designate places you have been and places you want to go. The frame keeps the map safe but it also grounds it so that it’s not a crumpled mess every time you add a pushpin.

You can also make decorations for holidays. The frames are used more like a border around pop-out images and elements for fun holiday decor. Pick a simple frame that you can customize and paint so that you can get as creative as you want without feeling limited by having to match the already decorative frame.

Ever notice how vintage prints look nicer in wooden frames? Mixing a classic print with a classic encasing just works. There is a level of consistency there that keeps viewers calm. When I choose a piece of art to frame I take into consideration the type of artwork it is (painting, drawn, modern, traditional) and the  room in which it will be placed. From there I can make an informed decision on just exactly how I think it should be framed and with what materials. It depends on the individual pieces, but I tend to notice that modern art looks great with a mounted canvas or in metallic picture frames, whereas vintage prints look much more refined in wooden picture frames.

When you choose a wooden frame it should coincide with the architecture of the room and the furniture. Oak, mahogany, cedar- what kind of wood features does your room already contain? Take these elements and repeat them by choosing frames that match. Painted or dark stained wooden frames create consistency with the rest of the room. They will look like they have always been there and belong there, not as implants to an already decorated room.

The frame is just as important as the art or photo it holds. Do not underestimate the power it holds as a piece of decor.

Do you have an empty wall somewhere in your home that you wish you could do something interesting with? Well, there are plenty of answers. One ingenious idea is to make a comprehensive photo wall. All you need are a series of different sized pictures, metal or wooden picture frames and imagination.

First, select a theme for the photo wall. Unless you want this project to be a jumbled mess of randomly selected images and mismatched frames, you should decide on the theme prior to hanging anything. A few general rules to consider: 1. Always make sure you leave enough room on the wall; 2. Keep all wall picture frames approximately at eye-level or just above eye level for easy viewing; 3. Organize the pattern before you hang them. They don’t have to be symmetrical but they should be appealing or interesting.

Pick one design of frame or alternate between two- you do not want the framing to be too distracting but you want to pique interest. Also, select photos that follow some sort of logical pattern. Unconventional displays are encouraged. Whether you’re telling a story, or you’re looking for abstract visual balance, the photos and their order are important too. What’s the point to a beautiful wooden picture frame if you do not have pictures worthy of their framing? If you enjoy photography choose some of your favorite photos.

large picture framesYou could just hang the pictures you put in the beautiful wooden picture frames you bought; or, you could give them the display they truly deserve. You can give a professional touch to anything you hang on your wall and it doesn’t require anything that complicated. Use a few framing techniques and you can give the wall picture frames much more appeal.

Here are a few of the tricks: matting, hinging, and glazing. These included with the framing of the picture should really emphasize its glory. As we’ve discussed in earlier posts, matting is used to center the picture within the frame. It is used in galleries and professional framing. Matte boards are either acid-free paper or cotton-based. It can be placed around or behind the artwork. It is not always the wisest option. Oftentimes it makes the photo look larger. It doesn’t always complement the item in the frame. It’s better with photographs and paintings, then say vintage texts and flattened items.

Hinging is the mounting of the art to the mat. You should always use archival materials. Nothing with oils or glue that can damage the art. It should always be removable and non-restricting. It’s not awful if you have to redo it, but it is awful if you can’t undo it.

As for glazing, that’s just the kind of glass or transparent (or translucent) material you choose to put into the frame to protect the picture. Try avoiding anything that will trap moisture. Also, make sure it doesn’t break easily. That could cut the art and end up being dangerous anyway.

wooden picture frameOne of the things I remember in visual arts classes was not to take any props for granted. I used to help my friends with their installations in the student gallery at the end of each major project. One of my friends had a brilliant idea. She was going to suspend a wooden picture frame in front of a wall mounted photograph so that depending on the angle, you can see different pieces of the scene within the photograph. It was quite interesting. It made her exhibit more interactive for gallery visitors.

Students are always trying to find ways to push boundaries. When they get an idea they need to see it through until the end. But having an interactive set up like this could get costly. That’s why it was even smarter than she decided to look for inexpensive picture frames. If you get these frames at a store that orders directly from the suppliers, like My Frame Store, you are guaranteed much lower prices. It’s just high quality for a great price, no strings attached.

There’s no reason you can’t save on a great product. Find exactly the frame you need, in whatever size, for whatever reason at My Frame Store.

There are creative things you can do with wood picture frames. For one, you can buy a bunch of them and create a wall collage of family memories. It’s a fantastic idea as surprise for family members. A simple black frame might be great for the black and white photos, whereas a mahogany frame looks nice with color photos.

Think of this creative endeavor like it’s a show on some snazzy new home improvement network or one of those talk show host’s brilliant “family gift ideas.” Emphasize the photo memories with a series of beautiful wall picture frames. Mix and match the photos in sections based on familial relations, or by year, or even by event type. There’s no limit to how you can put this together.

Another great option is to do some kind of family tree. You can feature the patriarchs and matriarchs of the family in large picture frames at the top, and decreasing in size hang smaller frames below for each generation. Add in a group photo somewhere at the very top or bottom with everybody should you feel like it. It’s one way to keep track of your family roots and it makes for a nice design.

wall picture framesMatte boards (also called Mats) are thin paper-based borders used in picture framing.  They have several practical applications outside of making the framing look professional.

A matte can be used to get smaller pictures into slightly over-sized wall picture frames. With the exception of mattes made for top-mounting, most mattes have apertures. A matte offsets the picture from frame as a decorative piece. It also keep the picture evenly aligned. To use a matte, you first carefully place the artwork in the matte and then put it inside your metal or wooden picture frame.

Mattes can also be used to preserve any art that you intend to hang. If you own limited edition prints or unique pieces, you should buy acid-free material mattes. Acid-free paper does not ruin paint or film. A matte will keep the print or other artwork from touching the glass. This means that condensation and dust is kept away from the surface of the piece. It prevents mold, mildew, and water damage. And, aesthetically, it draws the eye towards the center of the work, as it creates a natural border between the image and the frame. You can find mattes in black, white, gold, and other shades and colors.

If you cherish the pieces you hang in your home, then mattes are wise investments.

large picture framesOne of my all-time favorite things to do is collect posters and artwork. I collect posters for movies, television shows, music, and more. The artwork I find is from my vacationing internationally. It’s a hobby of mine. Each poster, painting, and sketch tells a different story. They are a reminder of the things I have seen and the places I have been. They’re great to put up around the home. Especially the vintage looking pieces. Those look fantastic in the living room.

But, unfortunately these posters can get fairly large in proportion. Large picture frames are necessary to protect and hang them. Sometimes these frames can get expensive. However, you can find a great selection of discount picture frames at My Frame Store. They get their inventory directly from manufacturers so that they pass on the savings directly to you.

So, if you’re anything like me and you have an affinity for collecting art of all kinds then you know that getting frames is essential. The good part is that you don’t have to spend lots of money in order to protect them. You can comfortably collect and hang the masterpieces as you desire in whatever sized wooden picture frame you need.
